Sun Salutation Warm-up

The Sun is our star. As the center of our solar system, it is the powerful symbol of energy and vitality to our planet. No wonder why people regularly flock to the beaches to lay out and absorb its infrared warmth and energy as a mental and physical recharge. Those who practice yoga are familiar with the importance of the Sun too.

Most people who do yoga have performed a Sun Salutation as a warm-up to the yoga workout. This warm-up is a very effective and complete way to prime the body for an upcoming sequence of isometric postures, but why is it called a “Sun” Salutation, or Salute to the Sun? It derives from the ancient Indian practice of facing the morning sun to the east to welcome energy into the body. “In the Vedic tradition, the Sun is symbolic of consciousness and, therefore, has been worshiped daily in the Indian culture.” (1) The sun is our primary source of light, and therefore, is the provider of energy to our planet.

Of course, infrared energy from that of an infrared sauna generates the same invisible light that is received from the morning sun. That is one advantage of doing yoga in an infrared sauna. Clients can regulate up or down the level of infrared based on the setting of the thermostat.

HOTWORX begins each of its isometric workouts with a modified version of the Sun Salutation. This is a perfect preamble to the workout and a primer to prep the body with infrared energy absorption. The modified Sun Salutation prepares the mind and body for a higher level of awareness. The importance of mind/body connection in fitness cannot be underestimated. The more aware the mind is of the physical movement of the body, the greater the performance of the task.

Elevated focus created from proper warm-up sets the tone for a great workout to come next!

“Yoga makes you get better at decision-making, and mind-body coordination. The traditional practice of Sun Salutation or Surya Namaskar builds single-mindedness, determination and commitment towards your goals.” (2)

Fitness is all about a commitment towards your goals. It is important to begin a workout with the proper warm-up! There is no better warm-up than that of a Sun Salutation.
